A group of seven alleged individuals of German far-left group stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for targeting sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or are in custody.”
