British authorities has included eleven more nations to its public warning register about the dangers of toxic alcohol poisoning from adulterated alcoholic drinks.
This updated travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a global increase in the frequency of reported cases" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Just a few weeks ago, officials had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, following several high-profile incidents including the deadly death of six visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being advised that even minimal doses of toxic alcohol can lead to vision loss or death within 12–48 hrs.
What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Used?
Methanol is a toxic industrial alcohol often utilized in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. This substance is not meant for ingestion.
While it is generated during the creation of spirits, licensed producers reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the refining procedure.
Yet in some countries, it is illegally mixed into beverages to reduce expenses, and since it is tasteless and smell-free, it is very difficult to detect.
Government Advice for Tourists
Government minister a senior official stated that each tourist should recognize the indicators of methanol contamination.
"When you are consuming alcohol overseas, stick to well-known venues and steer clear of local brews or unspecified beverages," the minister said.
"Should anything appears suspicious, such as a headache that's much more severe than normal or sight issues – seek medical attention right away."
