Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Squad But McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby squad announcement news

Returning head coach the Ireland coach has named captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland roster for the autumn Tests, however lock McCarthy misses out.

Doris, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to play against New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock Joe McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot issue he sustained during the opening Lions Test against Australia in July.

Ulster forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Nash also miss out due to fitness concerns, and number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation after the Lions tour.

Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped member in the 34-player squad, but Irish rugby authorities says new Munster duo Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Bolton will travel to Chicago as "reserves".

Following facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous encounter, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented the coach, who returns to national team duties after a break to lead the Lions tour to Australia.

In a mostly experienced selection, Leinster's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first occasion in the upcoming URC game at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 chosen as the coach opting against calling up the province's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer international wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced group of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to deputise for Keenan at full-back.

Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. The winger shone on his first Ireland outings during the summer with a brace each in the wins over Georgia and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of Leinster's URC league games this season and played in Ireland A's loss by England in Bristol earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, but did not earn a cap.

Southern province lock Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, and veteran Northern province lock Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is set to cover for the captain should the captain does not regain fitness in time to face New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will meet in Dublin on Monday before flying to the US on the following day.
